Upper Canada had its first French-speaking bishop in 1883. Then, Canada-West and Ontario saw over forty French-language bishops, many of whom played a prominent role in matters of colonization, education and social action. From Lake Erie to Bay James, from the diocese of London to the diocese of Moosonee, these pastors have gathered their flock – oves ad ovile – at all times, even when the political context was not in favour of the religious or linguistic minority. The author offers a biographical note for each bishop, their photo, their motto and a quotation from an episcopal letter or speech. Are included all French-speaking bishops having served in Ontario, no matter their place of birth, and those born in Ontario but having served outside the province.
